With sizzling hot temperatures, the last thing we need is a hot stove or oven to do our cooking! Summer time is a perfect opportunity to eat a variety of superfoods, foods that provide a lot of healthy nutrients and might have disease fighting abilities. Vegetables and fruits pack an impressive amount of nutrients and antioxidants, and are low in calories which can help shed some pounds, too. Try out some of these summer superfoods to help take advantage of healthy nutrients, stay cool, shed some pounds.

Salads–Before you say no thanks, don’t forget the variety of salads that you can eat. It doesn’t just have to be a mixture of veggies. They can be filling, too! Make them a mix of your favorites veggies, some kind of protein like beans, tuna, grilled chicken, seafood, low fat cheese, cottage cheese or eggs. Add in some whole grain pasta, croutons, or whatever else you like to make it fun and healthy. The more color, the more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in your plate! Looking for a new twist or flavor of salad? Try greek salads that are made with olive oil, (rich in monounsaturated fat, a healthy fat), and a great variety of vegetables such as cabbage salad, arugula salad, three bean salad, artichoke salad, or shrimp salad! Wraps–Another great way to get whole grains, and a variety of veggies. Use whole grain wraps without any hydrogenated oils.
Try to add in at least three to four veggies, and a protein source, like lean turkey, grilled chicken, or low fat shredded cheeses. A tasty, healthy entree without much fuss!

Pita sandwiches with hummus, guacamole or bruschetta–Hummus is made out of chick peas, which are an abundant source of fiber, guacamole is a rich source of monounsaturated fat, (a healthy fat), and bruschetta is filled with tomatoes, garlic, and herbs rich in antioxidants. As  summer is in full swing and vacations are being planned, we discussed in the previous blog how depending on what type of vacation you take, you might just be expending a lot of calories each day, which is the good news!  Walking at 2 miles per hour, which is a bit faster than leasure walking, can help burn about 600 calories in four hours, for a 150 pound person. This amount of calories being burned can help offset or decrease anxiety about eating or dining out during vacation time. You can feel good about enjoying some favorite foods at meals, but just do it in moderation.
Consider picking one meal a day to enjoy and not worry too much about calories, just focus on most of your meal comprising of  healthy food choices.  Try to have that meal earlier in the day if possible. Do your best to walk or move around after each meal to help work off some extra calories. Try to get your last meal done by 6pm or 7pm in the evening.

If you keep a decent calorie level throughout the day, work off 400 to 600 calories, and practice moderation at two out of three meals or a bit at each meal, your daily calorie intake and expenditure might result in a balance or hopefully a slight deficit, which would result in no weight gain during your vacation!

Don’t forget to take advantage of fitness centers and swimming pools at hotels to get some exercise. If you’re going on a cruise and worried about the 24 hour scrumptious buffets constantly in sight, make time for the sports deck! Many cruises offer basketball courts, rock climbing walls, golf courses, skating rinks, and surfing among other sport activities! Visiting the night clubs on deck? Dancing a lot helps burn calories, too. These are excellent opportunities to have fun and burn calories while vacationing.

When you get back, try to continue the walking or exercising and moderation of food intake during meals, and you will be automatically managing your weight.

Happy Vacationing–And Keep Moving  Around!

Vacation Without Weight Gain?

Could it be possible that you can go on vacation and come back without an additional few pounds? Yes, indeed and it might be easier than you think! Consider the fact that depending on what type of vacation you’re taking, there is a good chance that you will be moving around more than usual, such as if you are visiting an amusement park, national state park, famous landmarks, or sightseeing in a new city. You will be walking more than usual unless your current job involves more walking. If you have a fairly sedentary job, you are moving around more each day of your vacation if you are walking around most of the day. Just think why your feet hurt so much at the end of the day during a vacation!

Leisure walking or strolling(under 2 miles per hour) for about 20 minutes can burn about 45 calories for a person who weighs 150 pounds. Walking a bit faster at 2 miles per hour, can burn about 57 calories in 20 minutes for the same weight. So if you are sightseeing, or walking most of the day at an amusement park, you could be burning close to 600 calories in 4 hours! Not bad!
